According to a report from Variety.com, Adam Sandler recently revealed that one of his acting coaches implored him to quit acting because he simply didn’t have what it took to succeed. During a conversation with Brad Pitt for Variety, Sandler confirmed rumors of a story involving an NYU professor who told him he wouldn’t succeed as an actor.
Pitt claims he heard the tale from the director, Bennett Miller, who told him that, Adam, while a student at the New York University, went for a beer one evening with one of his professors who told him it would be best for Adam to simply quit while he was ahead.
“Listen, you got heart, but you don’t have it. Choose another path,” the professor reportedly told the Uncut Gems star. Pitt went on to say there was actually another part to the story, the fact that at a later date when Adam had made it big, he actually ran into the same professor.
Rather than rub it in his face, Adam kindly introduced him to his friends and stated, “this is the only teacher to ever buy me a beer.” Pitt went on to say that Adam’s behavior during that interaction was likely the reason why he has continued to stay successful.
Sandler went on to tell Brad that he loved him, and really appreciated what he said about his performance in Uncut Gems, for which Adam has received considerable praise. Sandler claims he felt far more comfortable in comedy, but if Brad said he did good, he knows he did.
Uncut Gems, released this year in 2019, stars Adam Sandler, directed by Benny Safdie and Josh, who also wrote the screenplay alongside Ronald Bronstein. The film also has Eric Bogosian, Julia Fox, Lakeith Stanfield, Idina Menzel, as well as Kevin Garnett.
Initially, it had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on the 30th of August, 2019, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on the 13th of December 2019. Thus far, both Adam Sandler’s performance, as well as the cinematography, has received near-universal acclaim.
